10 years ago do you still remember Christchurchs Earthquake?

Did you know in New Zealand every single year generally 15,000 earthquakes appear in New Zealand? but only about 100 or 150 of these earthquakes are large enough to deal any damage to the surrounding buildings. A decade ago, at 4:35am on the 4th of September 2010, residents in the city of Christchurch awoke to a 7.1 magnitude earthquake.    

Skulls

This week Wednesday for our last day of tech for the term we learned more about our bones. We also started to sketch a skull of a dog I asked Mrs Sharma if the picture was real Mrs Sharma said "I don't know" from that moment on  I didn't touch it, my sketch turned out pretty good because I had help from Seleti. We read about how many bones we have and highlighted the important facts, one of those facts are when we are old we have less bones and when we are young we have 300 bones. We got told to point at the bones with the exact names. I really enjoyed sketching and we also have 4 more weeks at Mrs Sharma's class before we move on to the next tech group.

Bones and Skeletons

Last week Wednesday for tech we learnt about bones and skeletons. Our teacher told us to write down what we knew about bones, I wrote down "we have more bones when we are born. but less when we grow old". She pulled up some names about our bones, then we had to change the simple names into the scientific names. We also looked at a skeleton model and looked at fake bones and some real bones. Another fact is that the stapes is the smallest bone in our body located in our ear, and the femur is the biggest bone in our body.

66th Birthday

Last week Friday it was Ruapotaka's 66th birthday, it was a normal day until it was 11:30 were Mrs Hamilton held an assembly outside room 1. She asked us if we knew what today was, most of us were confused but the rest of us said it was our 66th birthday they brought a large
cake out and everyone was like WOW! The oldest student in our school came up with the youngest student and cut the cake there names are Nurul and Isadora. At lunch time everyone got a slice of cake it had blue icing on top of the cake the flavour was chocolate.       

Whale Count

New Zealand's very first nationwide whale count got started last weekend. The first whale enumeration will run from 9:30 until 3:30 on Saturday with help from volunteers all over the community. The plan is to design a baseline of how many marine mammals were seen along the coastline on one day, so they could compare number in the future.   

175 years since Hone Heke cut down the flagpole

Last week there was a special service in the far north that has marked the 175th year, to celebrate Hone Heke cutting down the flagpole at kororareka. At the 8th of July 1844 Hone Heke had become concerned with the Crown's over Maori case following the Treaty of Waitangi. Being signed by the British Crown and Maori chiefs in the 6th of February 1840.     

Jellyfish flock to New Zealand water

The hot water and air surrounding have contributed so there is a larger amount of jellyfish around New Zealand. Warm water had made the jellyfish come towards the shore, meaning that some swimmers had to break out in a rash known as a sea bather's eruption. In New Zealand people have been broadcasting that there is more jellyfish then usual. 

Avocado Milk

New Zealand made Avocado milk in July 17th 2013  and over one hundred stores are already selling Avocado milk across the United States. At the food innovation awards avocado milk was named the winner in the best health wellness drink category. For now the avocado milk is not in New Zealand, but they are currently launching a version soon. The avocado milk was first made by Sachie Nomura from Hawke's Bay and made from Avocado and oat milk.

Pest Control Lesson

Last week Friday, we had a pest control lesson with Frazer, our class and room 7 went around the school to put down tunnels where we think pests are and other traps to see what kind of pests were around our school. We also had a trap that would poison the pests, our class made our own traps out of cardboard. Thank you Frazer for giving us traps and for the lesson.       

Making Curry

Yesterday we made curry. In my group I had two students from St Pius X, Faye and Akesa. I had to stir the food while the others were cutting the ingredients. After that we put in the garlic.

After that I continued to stir the garlic. We then added in some more ingredients like spinach and tomato. After adding some rice, Mrs Merly came and tested all of ours to see which one she liked the most. Most of the students didn't like the curry we made but Texas and Frank did.
